On the evening of February 4, the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympic Games in Beijing was held at the National Stadium.
The grand opening of “The Beginning of Spring”, the full green interpretation of the Northern Song Dynasty’s masterpiece “A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains”, and the finale of “Flying Doves of Peace”… The costumes for these three programs are all produced by Hangzhou Shangcheng Local Organization Fabric Library Textile Library participated in the creation, using the fabric language of technological innovation and cooperating with the Olympic Organizing Committee to show the beauty of nature, humanity and sports of five thousand years of Chinese civilization.
The Fabric Library was established in 2015. After receiving the invitation from the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee in April 2021, the Fabric Library established a “Winter Olympics Equipment R&D and Creation Group”, which took 8 months. After more than a dozen proofings and multiple rounds of design plan modifications, the fabric library Continuous research and development on organization, technology, etc., until the creation and testing of all performance costumes are completed.
The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee’s requirements for fabrics are first of all functional, cold-proof and warm, breathable and moisture-repellent to cope with the severe cold weather in Beijing in winter. On this basis, the artistic appeal of the fabrics is achieved, and the ink painting of “Thousands of Miles of Rivers and Mountains” is presented. The layers, the mountain shape and the Great Wall shape of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou competition area, combined with lighting and angles, present a specific luster, which is a very high demand for original customization for fabric manufacturing.
The premise of clothing innovation is fabric innovation. “We need to ensure that the fabric is warm, does not wrinkle easily when dancing, does not get stuffy when sweating, and the upper body feels as light as a feather. When the bird’s nest spotlight shines on the square of actors, the color gathering effect must be optimal.” Fabric Book The relevant person in charge of the museum said.
To this end, Fabric Library Design implemented New Materials and cooperated with Chinese independent original designer Chen Peng to create a variety of materials, which were adjusted and optimized according to the needs of the performance. Based on the winter Professional wear for outdoor sports and ergonomic principles, using functional fabrics, taking into account the needs of outdoor scene operations in both dynamic and static conditions, “light, thin, and warm” to achieve all-round protection and auxiliary support.
In terms of material design, due to the special climate conditions of winter sports, it must not only resist severe cold, windproof and warm, but also be breathable, light and comfortable. But windproof and breathable, warm and lightweight are objectively contradictory. Chen Peng cooperates with the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee to achieve a balance through scientific material selection and outfit combination to meet the needs of all scenarios to the greatest extent.
In the end, a total of 5 original fabric works from the Fabric Library were presented at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics and surrounding areas. The opening program of the opening ceremony “The Beginning of Spring”, the finale program “The Flying Dove of Peace”, the performance uniforms of the flag bearers of 107 countries, the appearance uniforms of the Chinese champion delegation, the down uniform materials of the Winter Olympics high-speed rail train attendants and the costume materials of the performers in the Winter Olympics concept promotional video , all designed and created by Fabric Library.
