The industrialized technology for grass and wood dyeing was jointly developed by Murata Dyeing, Naktō Chemical Industry (Otsu City), which operates the finishing agent business, and the Kyoto City Industrial Technology Research Institute. This technology uses plant raw materials such as hematoxylin, cochineal, and pomegranate. If you dye a thick material, it takes 2 and a half days, and you have to wait for 1 day to let it dry naturally, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. In the early days of business operation, the available colors were very limited, but through the deployment of raw materials, the available varieties were expanded. Nowadays, in addition to light colors, Murata Dyeing also introduces intermediate and dark colors.
The fabric dyeing and garment dyeing business of Murata Dyeers has already been fully launched, but the yarn dyeing business has just started. The company began to conceive of this business last spring. After repeated trials, it figured out a skein dyeing process that can prevent uneven dyeing. Last year, it purchased two new fully automatic equipment that can meet the needs of both yarn dyeing and garment dyeing. The mass production system equipment has been improved.
Currently, there are 12 colors available for selection, including vermilion, pink, brown, red, purple, etc. Customers’ needs for other colors can also be met in batches. In addition to 100% cotton, the raw materials of hank yarn also include wool, cotton and linen blended yarn. In terms of finished products, shawls and tote bags have also been developed.
Murata Dyeing started out with kimonos, and the dyeing and finishing business of synthetic fibers is also the company’s business strength. 11 years ago, although the processing fee of the grass and wood dyeing business was 3 to 4 times that of the general dyeing business, because it conforms to the trend of advocating nature, it has continued to be favored by well-known brands and designers. The original grass and wood dyeing business only accounted for 5% of the total business, but now it has expanded to about half. In addition, the company has also produced hangtags with the words “Jingluo Dye” printed on them, and plans to launch its own brand products in the future.
