On March 21, according to the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Anyang County, Anyang City, Henan Province, has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs as a national cotton seed production county.
It is understood that Wei Zhangquan, a retired scientific researcher of the institute, once cultivated “Wei Cotton No. 1” in Ximu Village, Hanling Town, with a yield of 975 kilograms of seed cotton per mu. Among them, 4,900 plants were planted per mu, with 13.1 peaches per plant, the average boll weight was 7.6 grams, and the yield per mu reached 975 kilograms.
Anyang County relies on the strength of the national team of the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to vigorously implement the cotton improvement project and continue to accelerate the construction of improved seed breeding systems and bases. The county has built main cotton seed breeding production areas in three towns: Baibi Town, Yonghe Town, and Hanling Town. In 2020, the county’s cotton breeding and seed production area is 11,000 acres, and the cotton seed output is 572,000 kilograms, which can satisfy 366,000 acres. Anyang County’s cotton seed production mainly uses conventional high-quality cotton varieties, with a small amount of hybrid high-yield cotton seeds. The county’s seed quality all meets the national standard, and 86% of them meet the national standard. At the original seed level, 14% are improved varieties, and the seeds are sold well in Hebei, Shandong, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui and other places.
In this selection, Anyang County was selected as a major cotton seed production county together with Gucheng County in Hebei Province and Korla City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This will help accelerate the pace of construction of cotton seed breeding bases, improve the scale, mechanization, standardization, intensification, and informatization of the bases, further enhance the ability to guarantee cotton seed supply, and promote the sustainable development of the cotton industry in the Central Plains region.
