Continued rains could lead to cotton harvest failure in Tajikistan

The Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan has decided to establish a special committee. Members of the committee will set off to various parts of Tajikistan on the 6th to inspect the impact of excessive rainfall in 2009 on national agricultural output.
According to the director of the Agricultural Planting Technology Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture are currently seriously discussing the impact of the rainy season on agriculture and believe that sustained rainfall across a large area across the country may cause root rot of some crops and result in harvest failure. It is reported that 149,900 hectares of cotton have been planted in Tajikistan, accounting for 74.7% of the total amount that should be planted in 2009. Unfavorable weather conditions prevent Tajik farmers from planting seeds on time and may have to replant crops that died during the rainy season.
