According to Ghana’s “Trade and Finance Times” report, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry recently issued a statement stating that due to the large number of smuggled imported cheap textiles that have had a serious impact on Ghana’s domestic textile industry, the government will introduce new measures to protect the development of the country’s textile industry.
New measures include that the government will designate a port and stipulate that all imported textiles can only be declared and entered through this port. At the same time, checkpoints will be set up in the market to supervise and inspect the sales of textiles.
The minister said that a large number of cheap textiles enter Ghana through smuggling, which not only evades customs duties and other taxes and affects government revenue, but some smuggled textiles also misappropriate patterns and trademarks designed and developed by domestic textile companies, infringing on the intellectual property rights of domestic companies.
