According to the latest sales statistics released by Japan’s five major department stores, clothing sales in February 2009 dropped sharply by 12-15% compared with the same period in 2008. The overall sales of these department stores have declined by 10% since 2008, with apparel sales having the worst performance.
Sales in February hit the largest monthly decline since 1965 and marked the 12th month of sales contraction. Due to reduced demand, Isetan Department Store Shinjuku flagship store’s ready-to-wear sales fell 14%. As consumers reduced spending and reduced demand for clothing, Takashimaya Department Store’s ready-to-wear sales were hit hard, with sales falling 14.6%.
