South Africa’s textile industry has not benefited from restrictions on Chinese textiles

Econex, a well-known South African economic consulting company, recently stated that in the two years since South Africa imposed restrictions on Chinese textiles, the South African textile industry has not benefited from development, and imports from Bangladesh, Mauritius, Malaysia, Vietnam and other places have doubled. Although the output of South Africa’s textile industry increased slightly in 2007, reaching 2.68%, it fell by 1.47% year-on-year in 2008. In South Africa’s manufacturing industry, 22,000 people lost their jobs in 2007, and the number reached 35,000 in 2008, with the largest number of unemployed people in the textile industry.
