The 2008 Syrian cotton harvest season has arrived. However, according to relevant statistics from the Syrian Agricultural Science and Technology Research Federation, due to the impact of dry weather in 2008, cotton output dropped by 10-20%. The 2008 output is expected to be 650,000 tons.

out of the Syrian dry weather, cotton farmers have to rely on the use of diesel pumps to pump well water to irrigate farmland. The price of diesel rose sharply in 2008, causing additional financial burdens to the growers. Therefore, the Syrian government has decided to provide financial subsidies to cotton growers who use well water to irrigate their farmland.

The final cotton purchase price announced by the Syrian government in 2008 was 41 Syrian pounds/kg (approximately US$0.9/kg).
