The textile industry is troubled and not optimistic

At the just-concluded “2008 International Cotton Textile High-Level Forum”, relevant experts believed that although the country had previously introduced some support policies, the textile industry was still facing great difficulties, and the situation in 2009 was not optimistic.

Yuan Gangming, a researcher on China and World Economy at Tsinghua University, said that the macroeconomic environment is having an adverse impact on the textile industry. The appreciation of the RMB has led to a decline in the growth rate of textile exports. In 2009, the appreciation of the RMB will further accelerate.

Robert Antschak, President of Global Cotton Information Company, said that the global textile industry, including China, is facing the dual problems of increased costs and falling textile prices, and customers are increasingly affected by the decline in demand. In the global textile market, China is facing competition from five major competitors, namely Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. The total textile production of these rivals has grown rapidly, and the overall scale has now caught up with China’s.

Zhang Xian, deputy secretary-general of the China Chamber of Commerce for Textile Import and Export, said that textile exports will be further troubled by trade disputes. The U.S. industry is demanding that the “import monitoring measures” currently implemented in Vietnam be extended to China starting in 2009, that is, the import quantity, amount, and unit price of China’s key commodities will be monitored. The EU wants the textile trade agreement to be relatively stable.
