Data show that in the 2016/17 fiscal year, Bangladesh’s export growth rate reached its lowest level in 15 years, with the full-year growth rate being only 1.7%. Among them, the export revenue of the key industry garment manufacturing industry was US$28.15 billion, and the growth rate dropped sharply from 10.14% in the 2015/16 fiscal year to 0.25%.
Professor Siddiqui, a Bangladeshi legal economist, believes that if the exports of the garment industry maintain the current trend, China is likely to replace Japan as Bangladesh’s largest garment export market in Asia in the next three years. Local industry insiders said that with the rapid development of China’s economy, the middle-income group with strong purchasing power continues to grow and is becoming the main export target group of Bangladeshi clothing.
