According to a report by Madagascar’s “Express” on September 28, Madagascar’s textile industry has passed the dark period of slow development after 2009. Data released by the Economic Development Board of Madagascar (EDBM) show that the industry provided or created more than 35,000 jobs throughout 2016. According to this analysis, this number may reach 200,000 within 5 years.
It is reported that during 2015-2016, Madagascar’s domestic textile and clothing export growth rate was 12%, and related products were mainly exported to the European market. The Director of the EDBM Investor Services Department said that after Madagascar resumed enjoying the African Development Opportunities Act in 2016, exports to the United States accounted for 18% of the total, and exports to the EU accounted for 69%; in 2019, Madagascar’s textile products to the United States accounted for 18% of the total. Export volume is planned to exceed US$500 million.
The political crisis in Madagascar ended in 2009, but for a long time, the Madagascar government did not provide policies to promote the development of the textile industry. According to the relevant plans of EDBM, Madagascar’s textile industry may be used as one of the levers to drive Madagascar’s economic development. Therefore, the “Textile City” project was specially planned in November 2016 as a future special economic zone for the textile industry. This area will actively promote and promote the investment and development of the textile industry in the future.
According to the relevant person in charge of EDBM, in the first phase, the Textile City plans to export products worth about one billion US dollars to the world, most of which will be oriented to the US market. In terms of job creation, there may be 80-100 large-scale textile and garment enterprises and supporting companies to absorb 200,000 jobs. As of now, the Textile City is still in the planning stage.
