Foreign news on July 26, Roop Rashi Mahapatra, textile commissioner of the Ministry of Textiles of the Indian government, said that the government is considering providing incentives to the textile industry to promote sustainable development. The Indian government is committed to sustainable development through policy interventions, adding that every stakeholder in the textile industry needs to demonstrate commitment and responsibility for sustainable development across the entire textile value chain.
Mahapatra made this message on Wednesday at a webinar titled “Sustainability in Action: Exploring Circular and Sustainable Solutions for the Textile Industry” .
Mahapatra pointed out the harmful impact of the textile industry on the environment globally and highlighted the 20% contribution of the textile industry to water pollution reported by the World Bank . She said the textile industry is the largest job creator in the country after agriculture and every stakeholder has an obligation to make it sustainable and the industry should consume water, energy and other resources wisely.
She acknowledged that implementing sustainability in the industry requires significant capital and financial support. This support can promote the use, recycling and certification of renewable energy. Retail brands must support the entire ecosystem. The industry should be encouraged and incentivized to ensure that companies along the value chain adopt sustainable practices. Mahapatra added that the government would not only consider providing institutional financial support but also consider implementing a rating system for companies.
