According to a report by Nigeria’s “Guardian” on July 16, in order to solve the current difficulties faced by Nigeria’s textile industry, President Buhari decided to establish a special committee whose main task is to investigate problems existing in cotton, textiles, clothing and other industries. Sort out, find solutions, and formulate specific measures. The committee is led by the Bureau of Agriculture of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and will submit a special report to the President in the near future.
The report quoted Sonny, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nigeria, as saying that the committee will focus on solving the current government’s regulatory policies and the market floods on the basis of comprehensive control of the development status of cotton, textiles, clothing and other related industries. It faces the contradictory problem of a large amount of cheap and defective textile raw materials. Sonny emphasized that this is one of a series of directives issued by President Buhari recently after discussions with officials from relevant departments.
Sunny pointed out that the Nigerian Textile Co., Ltd. in Kaduna and other textile companies across the country could provide 400,000 local jobs in the past. However, due to the large amount of textile imports, these textile companies can currently only provide 30,000 jobs. Among the 51 flower-tying factories across the country, only 22 are currently operating, with a capacity utilization rate of only 30%, and they are still closing down. This is also the main reason why President Buhari established this special committee, which is to start from cotton, improve product quality, and revive the Nigerian textile industry.
