The Wuxi Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau of Jiangsu Province recently discovered 10 serious weight shortages of wool imported from New Zealand during the inspection and supervision of inbound wool. The value of the goods reached 5.46 million US dollars, and the short weight of the largest batch reached 4.68%.

The current shortage of domestic wool has made my country’s wool spinning industry an industry that is highly dependent on the international market. The large import volume, diversified varieties, and high market dependence have led to endless problems with imported wool.

On the one hand, the problem of short and heavy imported wool occurs frequently. In 2014, Wuxi imported a total of 38,885 tons of wool with a value of US$269.34 million, a year-on-year increase of 22.7% and 18.4% respectively. Among the imported wool inspected by the Wuxi Inspection Bureau, 3,446 tons of unqualified weight were valued at US$17.78 million. The weight and value increased by 46.1% and 54.3% respectively year-on-year.

On the other hand, quality problems are becoming increasingly serious. The main reasons for the unqualified quality of imported wool in Wuxi are that the fineness of the wool does not meet the requirements and the length index does not match the contract. In 2014, a total of 47 batches of imported wool were found to be of substandard quality in Wuxi, accounting for 61.0% of the total batches of unqualified wool.

Therefore, when importing foreign wool, relevant enterprises must strengthen cooperation with the inspection and quarantine departments, strictly strengthen the inspection and supervision of incoming wool, and jointly control the quality of imported wool.
