In order to enhance the competitiveness and popularity of the local garment manufacturing industry, Japan will launch a new “Truly Made in Japan” industry benchmark. In the future, clothing that has completed the weaving, dyeing, and sewing production processes in Japan can be labeled with the “Truly Made in Japan” label representing high-quality products. However, this label only proves that the clothing is made in Japan by highly skilled workers and does not restrict production companies from importing raw materials from abroad.

This measure will be officially implemented on January 14. At this stage, clothing with the “Made in Japan” label is allowed to be dyed in Japan using fabrics woven from abroad, and is not “Made in Japan” in the strict sense. Official data shows that imported clothing accounts for about 97% of Japan’s total clothing sales. Japanese officials believe that the introduction of new measures will help urge the local clothing manufacturing industry to improve product quality and no longer focus on selling “cheap goods.”
