The All Pakistan Textile Manufacturers Association recently stated that India has adopted tax rebates and other incentive measures for cotton yarn exports and imposed high tariffs on imported cotton yarns. Pakistan only levies a 5% tariff on imported cotton yarns. In recent years, Pakistan’s imports of cotton yarn from India have shown an abnormal upward trend. In the 2013-14 fiscal year, it imported 26,000 tons, much higher than the 17,000 tons in the 2012-13 fiscal year. The large-scale dumping of Indian cotton yarn has posed a serious threat to Pakistan’s local textile industry. The association has requested the Pakistan Ministry of Commerce to immediately take safeguard measures on cotton yarn imported from India in accordance with the Safeguard Measures Regulations 2002.
