According to the “Citizen” report, Tanzania’s Sinyangga district councilor requested the relevant departments of Tanzania to take immediate measures to intervene in cotton seed prices and reduce the current 500 Tanzanian shillings (approximately 1.9 yuan) per kilogram to the price recommended by the Tanzania Cotton Association. That is 350 shillings (about 1.2 yuan) per kilogram.
Relevant officials said that local farmers have spent a lot of money to grow cotton, but international cotton prices are falling every year. If the price of cotton seeds is too high, it will severely dampen farmers’ enthusiasm for growing cotton, and Tanzania’s cotton industry will have no future. They warned that if cottonseed prices did not fall, farmers would be encouraged to plant other cash crops such as sunflowers.
