In 2017, the unit price of China’s clothing exports to the United States fell, and its export share remained unchanged. The unit prices of Bangladesh and Cambodia’s clothing exports to the United States both declined. Vietnam’s clothing exports are gaining momentum and are about to catch up with China.
According to statistics, China’s total apparel exports to the United States fell further last year, with the average export unit price falling 4.9% year-on-year, and Bangladesh’s falling 4.1% year-on-year. The main reason for the decrease in the unit price of China’s clothing exports is the improvement of production efficiency and the increase in demand for low-end products in the United States, while the main reason for the decrease in the unit price of Bangladesh’s clothing exports is the depreciation of the Bangladeshi currency against the US dollar. Last year, the unit price of Cambodia’s clothing exports to the United States fell by 2.7% year-on-year, among which the unit price of women’s pure cotton sweaters fell sharply by 12.3% year-on-year.
For men’s and boys’ cotton trousers, the unit price fell by 7.7% in China, 7.3% in Indonesia, and 6.6% in Bangladesh.
Overall, the unit price of China’s clothing exports is about 20% lower than the average level, while the unit price of Indonesian clothing exports is 26% higher than the average level, Sri Lanka is 43% higher, and Mexico is 44% higher.
Although Chinese clothing still accounts for a huge share of the U.S. clothing market, Vietnam’s share of the U.S. clothing market in major clothing categories is also rising rapidly, especially chemical fiber clothing. According to statistics, in 2017, Vietnam’s chemical fiber apparel market share in the United States rose to 16.6%, and China’s 38.4%. In terms of men’s and boys’ chemical fiber shirts, Vietnam’s market share in the United States reached 14.1%, surpassing China’s 13.3% market share.
