According to China Customs statistics, the national fabric import and export volume in 2017 was US$60.53 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.5%. my country’s fabric trade is mainly exported, accounting for nearly 90%. Imports account for about 10% and are declining year by year. As my country’s independent research and development capabilities for fabrics continue to increase, some high-end fabrics that were monopolized by Europe, the United States and Japan in the past have achieved independent production. Reduced import demand is an important reason for the decline in imports. The national fabric export volume for the whole year was US$54.94 billion, an increase of 4.1%. The import value was US$5.6 billion, down 1.3%.
1. Cotton imports and exports increased in December
The national fabric export volume in December was US$4.98 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.7%. Both the import and export of cotton cloth maintained growth, with export value of US$1.13 billion, an increase of 3.6%, and import value of US$91 million, an increase of 6.3%. The export value of chemical fiber woven fabrics was US$1.89 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.9%, and the import value was US$190 million, an increase of 1.1%.
2. Exports to emerging markets are growing rapidly
Asia is the main market for my country’s fabric exports, accounting for 66% of fabric exports. In 2017, my country’s exports to Asia totaled US$36.28 billion, a slight increase of 2.7% year-on-year. Among them, Vietnam is the largest single market for my country’s fabric exports, accounting for 14.3% of my country’s fabric exports to the world, with an export volume of US$7.89 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.6%.
Among the top 15 countries and regions, exports to the next six emerging markets have grown rapidly: Bangladesh (2nd), the Philippines (4th), Cambodia (6th), and Nigeria (10th) ), Brazil (11th), and Myanmar (12th) are growing rapidly, with exports of US$4.21 billion, US$2.94 billion, US$2.16 billion, US$1.3 billion, US$1.07 billion, and US$1.065 billion respectively. 7.4%, 18.8%, 22.6%, 55.3%, 16.3%, 26.1%.
Among other major markets, exports to the EU have maintained a steady upward trend since May, with a cumulative export volume of US$4.1 billion throughout the year, a year-on-year increase of 5.4%. Exports to the United States were US$1.76 billion, a slight decrease of 1.5%.
3. Fabric exports from coastal provinces have grown steadily
The southeastern coast is the main area for fabric exports, and the top five exporting provinces all maintain steady growth. The five provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian, and Shandong accounted for more than 80% of the total, with exports of US$19.47 billion, US$9.95 billion, US$6.96 billion, US$4.3 billion, and US$3.75 billion respectively. Among them, Guangdong Province grew rapidly, with an increase of 12.5%.
