According to the latest data released by the Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX), Peruvian textile exports in the first half of the year reached US$5.855 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 7.7%. The ADEX Manufacturing Department pointed out that the industry had grown by 6% in January, but has been declining since then. The declines from February to June reached 2%, 2%, 12%, 20%, and 11% respectively.
Pedro Gremio, the manager of the above-mentioned department, suggested that the public and private sectors of the Secretariat should work together to restore the positive momentum of growth in the industry: “Currently, the market share of U.S. textiles in Central America has surpassed ours.”
Gremio also pointed out that the government should also formulate measures to improve the competitiveness of the industry, because “the textile industry is of great importance to Peru and it provides considerable employment.”
According to ADEX data, the United States is the largest export market for Peruvian textiles, with an export value of US$3.298 billion, followed by Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Colombia, Mexico, and Ecuador.
