According to a recent report by Peru’s “Business Daily”, data from the Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX) showed that Peru’s clothing exports to Argentina in the first quarter reached US$4.5 million, a year-on-year decrease of 35.8%. As Argentina imposes tariffs and other restrictive measures on imports of Peruvian clothing, its ranking among Peruvian clothing export destinations has dropped from fifth place in 2011 to tenth place now. It is precisely because of the series of trade protectionist measures recently adopted by Argentina that the country’s import of intermediate products and consumer goods slowed down in the first two months of this year.
ADEX Economic Research Manager Carlos Gonzáles said: “Argentine consumer goods prices are currently growing at a rate of more than 25%, and the country’s consumer households will be affected. If more foreign consumer goods can be allowed to enter The country’s market will alleviate the excessive rise in prices.” Finally, Carlos Gonzalez publicly stated that he hopes the Argentine government can adopt a more flexible strategy on trade measures.
