Brief overview of cotton yarn imports across the country

In 2013, the country’s yarn import value reached US$9.61 billion, of which cotton yarn imports were the main import, accounting for 71%. The import value reached US$6.82 billion, accounting for 25.3% of the country’s total textile and clothing imports.
The characteristics of cotton yarn imports throughout 2013 are as follows:
1. my country’s cotton yarn imports hit a new high in 2013.
Since 2008, China’s cotton yarn imports have increased year by year. In 2011, the import amount was US$3.41 billion, and in 2012 it was US$4.96 billion. According to customs statistics, the national cotton yarn import volume in 2013 was US$6.82 billion, a year-on-year increase of 37.5%; the total import volume reached 2.1 million tons, which was four times the total cotton yarn export volume, a year-on-year increase of 37.4%; the average import unit price was US$3.25/ kg, down 0.1% year-on-year.
2. From a single month perspective, the unit price of cotton yarn imports first increased and then decreased, and imports increased overall.
Except for the negative growth in February, the import volume has increased to varying degrees in each month. In 2013, the national average import price of cotton yarn was 3.25 US dollars/kg. The import unit price in January was 3.19 US dollars/kg, and then showed an upward trend until it reached the highest value in May, which was 3.31 US dollars/kg; then it declined steadily. India and Pakistan are the two main sources of cotton yarn imports in my country. In the first 11 months, the amount of cotton yarn imported by my country from India exceeded Pakistan for the first time, becoming the largest source country of cotton yarn imports in China. Throughout 2013, my country imported 627,000 tons of cotton yarn from India, a year-on-year increase of 104.6%, accounting for 29.9% of China’s total cotton yarn imports; the import value was US$2.03 billion, and the import price was US$3.24/kg. my country’s total import volume from Pakistan was 601,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.2%, accounting for 28.6%; the import value was US$1.76 billion, and the unit price was US$2.93/kg. Vietnam is China’s third largest source of cotton yarn imports, with an import volume of 258,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 48.1%.
Among the remaining top ten import source countries, my country’s imports from Indonesia, the United States, and Thailand grew very rapidly, with increases of 89.8%, 117.1%, and 115.4% respectively. The import quantities were 66,000 tons, 52,000 tons, and 47,000 tons respectively. In terms of quantity, it ranks sixth, seventh and eighth.
4. Guangdong, Beijing, and Zhejiang are the main importers of cotton yarn in China.
In 2013, Guangdong was the largest province for cotton yarn imports in China. There were 690 importing companies, and the import volume was 662,000 tons, accounting for 31.5% of the country’s total imports, a year-on-year increase of 23%; the import value was US$2.29 billion, and the average import price Relatively high, at US$3.45/kg. Beijing and Zhejiang ranked second and third among our cotton yarn importing provinces and cities, with import quantities of 376,000 tons and 343,000 tons respectively, a year-on-year increase of 35.8% and 25.2%. The import prices were US$3.05/kg and US$3.06/kg respectively. The remaining ten major importing provinces and cities all experienced growth. Shanghai increased by 67.5% year-on-year. The total import volume of Fujian and Anhui increased by 97.9% and 87.5% respectively. Hebei and Hubei both increased by more than twice.
