According to Bangladesh’s “Daily Star” report, the Bangladesh Wage Commission has proposed to relevant departments to set the minimum monthly wage for textile workers at 3,000 taka (approximately US$42). On July 27, a large number of textile workers gathered in Muktangan to demand a monthly wage of 5,000 taka (the current minimum monthly wage for textile workers is only 1,662.50 taka).
In the last fiscal year, Bangladesh’s garment exports earned US$1.8 billion, accounting for 80% of total exports. Bangladesh Labor Minister Musharraf Hussain said that the results of the government’s ruling will be announced in the near future.
