Tracy Jacobson, charge d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia, met with Ethiopian Ambassador Tesfaye Yilma on June 18, 2022. The United States affirmed Ethiopia’s peaceful and stable attitude and measures to resolve the civil war and stated that it would re-evaluate Ethiopia Returned to the list of beneficiary countries under the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

On January 2, 2022, the United States kicked Ethiopia out of the list of AGOA beneficiary countries due to human rights issues caused by the Ethiopian civil war. This has greatly affected Ethiopia’s textile and other industries. In 2020, Ethiopia relied on AGOA’s tax-free provisions to export $227 million in textiles to the United States, accounting for 43% of Ethiopia’s overall exports to the United States.
