“As the scale of hand embroidery slowly expands, more people learn about Wu embroidery, and the skills of Wu embroidery will gradually be integrated into the traditional embroidery skills of the Kirgiz people. Wu embroidery will surely blossom and bear fruit in the west of the motherland in the future. “Buruli Sikeke, the fourth generation representative inheritor of Kirgiz embroidery, a national intangible cultural heritage representative project in Wensu County, Xinjiang, said on the 8th.

In the past few days, Buruli Sikeke led the embroiderers to learn Wu embroidery and Suzhou embroidery, and together they completed a flower work with red, blue and green as the main colors.

Bozidun Kirgiz Ethnic Township in Wensu County is a well-known embroidery town in Xinjiang and a national intangible cultural heritage protection project Kirgiz embroidery training base. Kirgiz embroidery skills are a traditional folk custom of the Kirgiz people. The embroidery products are widely used in home decoration and clothing. They are colorful and luxurious. They are good for daily use at home and as gifts for relatives and friends.

The opportunity to integrate Wu embroidery into the Kirgiz embroidery skills was a cultural exchange event organized by the Xinjiang Aid Headquarters of Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province. In April 2021, the “Wufeng Heritage·Craftsmanship Workshop” Jinhua Xinjiang Aid Xinjiang’s second phase “Double Dragon Plan” culturaltalent training class was held at Mingyue, Jinhua Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall The bookstore is open. Ten cultural and artistic backbones from Wensu County had close contact with intangible cultural heritage projects such as Dongyang woodcarving, Jinhua paper-cutting, and Wu embroidery.

Among the ten people are Buruli Sikeke, the fourth generation representative inheritor of Kirgiz embroidery, and her apprentice Buruli Ayif. During this period, the two masters and apprentices of Buruli Sikeke and Wu Fang Ximan, the inheritor of Wu embroidery’s intangible cultural heritage, exchanged and studied.

“Panjin embroidery” is the core technique of Wu embroidery, which is completely different from the Kirgiz embroidery technique. Buruli Sikeke humbly asked for advice and learned, and he mastered the basic skills of Wu embroidery in a few days. After Bruli Skeke returned to Xinjiang after completing his studies, he kept in touch with Wu Fangximan.

After returning to his hometown, Buruli Sikeke was thinking about how to expand the sales of embroidery products. In 2021, a local girl will get married. According to local marriage customs, the woman needs to prepare bedding. The girl found Bululi Sikeke to order bedding and souvenirs for her wedding. Buruli Sikeke is trying his hand at making a small debut. He uses twisted wool and silk threads, uses “panjin embroidery” to crochet, and traditional techniques to fill in colors. He makes a set of bedding and handkerchiefs with exquisite peony patterns at a low price. Much higher. The girl reported that the texture and feel were very good, and the embroidery finished product was very good.

Influenced and inspired by Wu embroidery skills in Jinhua, Zhejiang, Buruli Sikeke was determined to create a new style of Kirgiz embroidery. In April 2022, Master and Apprentice Buruli Skeke participated in a training class for Xinjiang embroidery inheritance groups, and gained an in-depth understanding and learning of Su embroidery techniques that also have Jiangnan characteristics.

Buruli Sikeke said: “Last year, the Baomeite Kirgiz Women’s Handmade Embroidery Farmers’ Professional Cooperative in Wensu County sold more than 1,000 pieces of finished embroidery products, with a net income of about 32,000 yuan. We hope to use traditional Kirgiz embroidery Technological innovation continues to develop new embroidery products, continuously expand the Kirgiz traditional embroidery market, and increase the income of embroiderers.”

Bruli Skeke mentioned that the Jinhua Xinjiang Aid Headquarters attaches great importance to Kirgiz embroidery, a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage. At the beginning of the cooperative’s establishment, the Jinhua Xinjiang Aid Headquarters invested in the purchase of 166 embroidery machines to support the cooperative’s development and growth.

Today, these donated embroidery machines are still in normal use in the cooperative and are used to produce finished embroidery products every day.
