According to reports, the Minister of Labor of Mauritius faces many requests from textile companies to close down every day. Since the beginning of 2009, many companies have complained that the global financial crisis has brought them many difficulties and they can no longer withstand the pressure. The threat of unemployment among textile workers has increased. They applied for closure, but the government did not agree.
Due to reduced orders and exports, companies have laid off a large number of employees every month since January 2009. According to the Mauritius Exporters Federation, 4,000-5,000 people have been laid off in the textile industry from 2008 to early 2009, and there will be more in the future.
