According to Pakistan’s “Business Record” report, the chairman of the Pakistan Leather Clothing Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA) said that due to the global economic crisis, leather clothing retail sales in Europe and North America have dropped by about 30% compared with the same period last year, and leather clothing exporters have been struggling for several months. No new orders were obtained.
The chairman pointed out that leather clothing manufacturers are currently facing capital flow problems as the customs and sales tax collection departments have put the tax refund work on hold for several months. He urged relevant authorities to take urgent measures and take seriously the problems faced by leather clothing manufacturers and exporters.
According to statistics, Pakistan’s leather clothing exports from July to November 2008 were US$198 million, a decrease of 8% compared with US$215 million from July to November 2007. In November 2008, there was a sharp decrease of 35% compared with the same period in the previous fiscal year.
