On March 2 and 4, representatives from Brazil, the United States, and the WTO will hold meetings in Geneva to once again discuss the issue of US subsidies for cotton production. Brazil hopes to use this meeting to ask the United States to implement WTO rulings and formally cancel subsidies to cotton farmers. If the parties are unable to reach an agreement on the modification period of the US cotton farmer subsidy policy or the extent of subsidy reduction, the meeting will also discuss which industries Brazil is allowed to implement trade retaliation against the United States.
According to local media reports, Brazil most hopes that the United States can cancel subsidies to cotton farmers, which can increase the export price of Brazilian cotton. If subsidies cannot be eliminated, Brazil hopes that the United States can compensate in some way, including reducing import tariffs on Brazilian textile products.
