The Nigeria Textile and Garment Workers Union recently issued a warning: Nigeria’s textile industry is on the verge of collapse. In 2008, some textile factories in Nigeria closed down or reduced production, directly or indirectly causing more than 2,500 workers to lose their jobs. The number of textile companies in Nigeria has dropped from 120 in the 1970s to 25 currently. The alliance believes that the main reasons why Nigeria’s textile industry is on the verge of collapse include: high production costs, rampant smuggling, incoherent government policies, and poor infrastructure.
