Fiji raises minimum wage standards in clothing and other industries

The Fiji Wage Commission announced a few days ago that it will raise the minimum wage standards in nine industries, including clothing, starting from January 1, 2009, with the increase ranging from 5-20%. The Fiji Employers Association and various industry committees expressed strong dissatisfaction with this, believing that taking this measure under the current extremely severe economic environment at home and abroad will only add insult to injury. Some small businesses may go bankrupt as a result, and the country’s economic development will be hit.
